Sores on my back and arms

They're on my upper back and left arm. Sun seems to help, but I don't want to ruin my skin by tanning. I've also tried soap/shampoo that did not contain Betaine (read an article that made me think I could be allergic) and they cleared up within days, but they came right back. Elizabeth Anderson Responds:

Thanks for your question. It would be difficult to diagnose these sores without seeing them and possibly doing a simple biopsy. A number of different etiologies could be responsible for lesions that you describe (folliculitis, allergies, etc). I would start by recommending that you wash your skin no more than once a day using only a mild cleanser such as Lever 2000. Apply the soap only with your hands- avoid harsh abrasives like loufas. Try to use a hypoallergenic laundry detergent like Tide Free. Don't apply any type of moisturizer. Whatever you do, don't scrape or pick at the sores! If they don't clear up within two weeks I would recommend seeing a dermatologist.
